Sexy Provocateur Slut Debutante Diaries Presents: Damien by Jayson 'Jace' Marsh / P!X!E How do I describe Damien? His voice is a melodic blend of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds with the vocal prowess of Stephen Jenkins of Third Eye Blind and the sexual power of Robbie Williams, Just to name a few but, he has a unique ear for the craft of music all his own. It's a voice that swoons you and seduces you into the darker side of moonlight in one breath.
Damien also has this nurturing intellectual side to him that is equal parts wise from experience and intimately honest in the way a tender lover in the midst of passionate lovemaking. In this interview I peeled the layers of the reflective and romantic vocalist about his darker side, the power of his lyrics and a whole lot more. He's also a typical Scorpio who has a gorgeous body and deep soulful eyes to capture you.
Not to mention he writes his music! All around he's a guy that makes you quiver with ecstasy
This former staple of the New York City scene within the nightlife industry, Damien can best be described as an open book within an enigma. Ironically he's an old friend of a few people I know and we have never met.... Or maybe we have and we don't quite remember.
Either way after this conversation this will be an affair I will remember. Allow me to introduce you to the deeply charming, sexy and all around sweet vocalist... DAMIEN
JM: Welcome to the show. Can you tell my readers a bit about yourself?
D: I'm originally from Mass; from there I went to London for school. It was during this time became immersed in the club scene there and frequented them by night. I then came back to the US first in Boston, then New York, where I did back up for various artists.
Not long after, my demo tape earned me a backer deal; a staple performer singing and promoting my singles that were on Underground and College radio and were playing in a lot of New York Clubs at Webster Hall. At that time my material was very “producer driven” as it can be for a lot of new immerging recording artists. It was rewarding, but in a "producer driven" situation you’re really nothing more than a face, not really a performer. If you really consider yourself an artist, you need to do art!
I mean it was very high pressure; I was a commodity, very similar to the early 90's models that were simply selling products. I lost everything to become an artist. I had to start a new. My sound evolved from clubby into something more alternative, guitar driven, progressive.
JM: What inspires your music?
D: Either there's a theme or a fleeting thought, if it's a theme it's something that's going on in the details of my life.
JM: What is your opinion on club kids? Are club kids beyond their prime?
D: They are over and done for now.... There are different things at different times. They were individuals; the ones out there now aren't in the same vain. For an example of real old skool club kids, look up, Leigh Bowery. I think him; Boy George, Soixie and the cat lady were kinda like the pioneers of the whole subculture. It was about personalities not “Just outfits” a mark of individuality. It was re-invented in the 90’s and then that whole thing was going down in Limelight w/ Peter Gaitian. A lot of the Club kids kinda all started to go to Webster Hall. Reign Voltaire had a really cool party there with trapeze artists flying around stilt walkers and the likes. It was like all the freaks were freed from the tents and allowed to roam the Club. This is where I stepped in and started doing my thing. JM: How's your love life? D: From one subject right to another… It's forever changing; right now it's evolving very slowly. I had to change the “me stuff”, to deal with any kind of relationship stuff. Because, of the society we live in it gets kind of dicey to live up to expectations in relationships. My love life is going well... JM: What was your favorite song you've written on your last album? D: My favorite is ‘Fold’, it was rather easy to write. Songs are like children, each one has a different voice and reflects sides of a personality, very self-defining. JM: What are some of the albums you’re listening to right now? D: I'm listening to a lot of Mash-ups, The Doors, The Mama’s and the Papas, some Ronnie Spectors older stuff, The Sneaker Pimps, Garbage, Death Cab For Cutie, Magnetic Fields, and Pink. JM: What was the funniest experience you've had performing? D: I had two back up dancers back in the clubs, when one of them lifted her arm, her boustia popped up and out came her boobs and it kept coming out. She kept on dancing not missing a beat of the choreography, she tried to yank it up and it kept on falling, she gave up like 'I'm doing this and here are my tits.' JM: What would you describe yourself as? D: I'm definitely a realist, I'm also a hopeless romantic and most artists are. I think in my music I wear my heart on my sleeve. JM: How would you describe your sound? D: It's pop/rock that's guitar driven, A little lyrically smart, sensitive. My Next album is mid up-tempo but, it's more rock. JM: Complete these sentences: I'm sexy because... D: I'm sexy because, I say so. JM: If I ruled the world I'd be... D: If I ruled the world I'd be doing exactly what I'm doing right now. JM: My sexiest body part is... D: I think my lips but, give me 20 minutes alone and you tell me what my sexiest body part is... (Laughing) JM: your a live one aren't you. (Laughing) If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you need? D: A cell phone, some kind of electricity or power and third, somebody completely sexy to spend my time with. JM: Boxers, Briefs or nothing? D: Briefs, If I am sleeping alone and nothing if someone is here. JM: Final Question - What do you do when you do nothing? D: Sometimes I walk myself to a cafe, with a journal and order myself a vanilla latte.. I just simply write. Sometimes I may take a class, kickboxing or yoga or something like that to reconnect to myself. For me I don’t buy into finding myself, I think it’s more about knowing oneself. We as human beings sometimes need to reconnect sometimes. We spend so much time trying to know who we are yet, were always full of distractions that block us from knowing ourselves. I for one feel comfortable with myself. To hear some of damien's music go to his Myspace page and to learn more on him go to damienmusic.com.
